The annual 3-Day Road Market returns to U.S. 21 from Harmony in northern Iredell County to Wytheville, Va., this Friday through Sunday.

The event features yard sales/flea markets, sidewalk sales in front of retail businesses, local arts and crafts, food offerings and community events in towns and communities along this 100-plus-mile stretch of two-lane highway in northwestern North Carolina and southwestern Virginia.

Representative of towns and counties in the U.S. 21 corridor come together as an organization called Take a Break from the Interstate to plan the 3-Day Road Market.

Longtime Sparta businessman D.W. Miles organized Take a Break From The Interstate in 2012 to showcase and promote economic development in the historic U.S. 21 corridor.

The 3-Day Road Market generates income for individuals and businesses in the U.S. 21 corridor and brings attention to downtowns of small towns and rural scenery along the historic highway, said Miles.

Several towns and communities along this 100-mile stretch of U.S. 21 hold special events during the three days. Many people who live along the highway set up yard sales in front of their homes and at central locations

The Wilkes Chamber of Commerce, Town of Harmony, Town of Elkin, Elkin-based Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce, Jonesville Welcome Center, Alleghany Chamber of Commerce, Town of Harmony, Wytheville Convention & Visitors Bureau and Wythe County Tourism and Grayson County Tourism Development are also involved in the 3-Day Road Market.

The Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce is the contact for people interested in having vendor space at the Heritage Center in Elkin during the 3-Day Road Market.

The largest concentration of vendors along the portion of U.S. 21 in northeastern Wilkes is inside and in the front yard of the Thurmond Community Center.

The Thurmond Community Center makes several thousand dollars each renting out about 45 vendor spaces both inside and outside the community center building and selling food, said Kevin Cheek, spokesman for the nonprofit community center organization. Vendor space costs vary based on location but average about $50.

The organization sells barbecue, hot dogs and more during the 3-Day Road Market. Cheek said one local vendor always has a large selection of fresh vegetables for sale. There are port-a-johns available for the public.

He said painting, installing a drop ceiling and other renovations are planned for the community center building, constructed in the 1950s.

U.S. 21 was an important north-south highway connecting the area around Lake Erie and the coastal areas of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida before the age of interstates.

Sometimes called the “Lakes-to-Florida Highway,” U.S. 21 was among the few true north-south routes crossing the middle Appalachian Mountains. The highway was completed from Ohio to South Carolina in 1926.

Construction of Interstate 77 in North Carolina and Southwest Virginia resulted in many motorists bypassing towns and communities along U.S. 21.

In northwestern North Carolina, U.S. 21 passes through Harmony and Houstonville in Iredell County; Hamptonvillle, Brooks Crossroads and Jonesville in Yadkin County; Elkin in Surry County; State Road and Thurmond on the Wilkes-Surry county line; and Roaring Gap, Cherry Lane, Sparta and Twin Oaks in Alleghany County.

In southwestern Virginia, U.S. 21 goes through Independence and Elk Creek in Grayson County and Speedwell and Wytheville in Wythe County. It also goes through the Jefferson National Forest in Virginia.
